Beach Party

Beach Party follows an anthropology professor, Robert Sutwell, who travels to the California coast with his secretary, Marianne, to research the courtship habits of American teenagers. He observes a group of surfers led by Frankie and Dee Dee, who spend their time singing, dancing to Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, and clashing with a motorcycle gang called the Rats and Mice under Eric Von Zipper. The professor's involvement with the young people soon draws him into their world, and his relationship with Marianne takes a new turn as well. The film is a musical comedy built around beach culture and the surf music of the period.

William Asher directed, working from a screenplay by Lou Rusoff, who also produced alongside James H. Nicholson. Released in August 1963, it came at the start of Asher's credited feature run and preceded his next film, Johnny Cool, that same year. Robert Cummings and Dorothy Malone head the cast as the professor and his secretary, with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as the young surfers, and Harvey Lembeck as the gang leader. Morey Amsterdam also appears. The production credits 45 cast members and was handled by American International Pictures with Alta Vista Productions.

The film took in about 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from roughly 2,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller group of 43 voters. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from seven reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
