Gypsy

Gypsy tells the story of Rose Hovick, a driven stage mother who pushes her two daughters into vaudeville during the declining days of that circuit. She pins her hopes first on the younger girl, June, but when June leaves the act to marry, Rose turns her attention to her older daughter, Louise, who has less obvious talent. Working the tougher end of the business, Louise eventually steps into burlesque and becomes the celebrated stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. The film is adapted from the Broadway stage musical by Arthur Laurents, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and music by Jule Styne, which was itself suggested by Gypsy Rose Lee's memoirs.

Mervyn LeRoy directs and produces, working from a screenplay by Arthur Laurents and Leonard Spigelgass. It is the fourteenth of the fourteen features LeRoy directed, arriving six years after The Bad Seed. Rosalind Russell plays Rose, Natalie Wood plays Louise, and Karl Malden plays Herbie Sommers. Supporting parts include Paul Wallace as Tulsa, Betty Bruce as Tessie Tura and Parley Baer as Mr. Kringelein, within a credited cast of 108.

Warner Bros. Pictures released the film on 1 November 1962, and it runs 143 minutes. Against a budget of about 4 million dollars, it took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 7,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 78 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 comes from 15 reviews, close to the TMDB figure and below the IMDb score.
