Short description

Martin is a young man who arrives in Braddock, a small Pennsylvania town, to live with his elderly cousin Cuda. Martin is convinced he is a vampire and is drawn to human blood, though he shows none of the usual vulnerabilities: garlic, crucifixes and sunlight hold no fear for him. Lacking fangs, he relies on razors and sedatives to take blood from his victims. Cuda, who regards Martin as the bearer of a family curse, takes him in while trying to save his soul, and the tension between the two shapes the household. The film follows Martin's compulsion and his attempts to manage it, including phone calls to a radio programme in which he explains his own understanding of vampirism. The story plays as a psychological drama rather than a conventional horror tale.

George A. Romero directed and wrote the screenplay, working between Dawn of the Dead and Knightriders. Richard P. Rubinstein and Ben Barenholtz produced for Laurel Entertainment and Braddock Associates. John Amplas leads as Martin, with Lincoln Maazel as Cuda, Christine Forrest as Christina, Elyane Nadeau as Abbie Santini, Tom Savini as Arthur and Francine Middleton as the train victim. The film runs 95 minutes.

On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8/10 from roughly 325 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5/10 from 40 reviews places it somewhat higher than the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The scenes in Braddock, Pennsylvania, were filmed on location – in a suburb of Pittsburgh. Many local residents, including police officers, played extras in them.
  • The scene with Martin in the parade was not in the original script.
  • Tom Savini performed all the stunts himself and always applied his own makeup.
  • During the black-and-white flashbacks, the priest genuinely recites exorcism spells in Latin.
  • The initial scenes in the train compartment were filmed in a train standing on a siding. To create the illusion of movement, the technical crew was instructed to carry lanterns past the windows at regular intervals. According to George A. Romero, sometimes people were forgotten to be told the scene was filmed and continued to walk past the windows with lanterns.
