This is the third collaboration between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They previously starred together in "Mean Girls" (2004) and "Baby Mama" (2008).
Paula Pell wrote the roles of the two sisters specifically for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
The film was initially going to be titled "The Nest".
Amy Poehler recites a line from the song "Paging Mr. Herman." It refers to the main character of Tim Burton's 1985 film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," played by James Brolin.
John Cena plays a drug dealer named Pazuzu. This is the same name as the demon that possessed Regan MacNeil, played by Linda Blair, in William Friedkin's classic horror film "The Exorcist" (1973).
James Brolin and Dianne Wiest co-star as parents in the television comedy series "Life in Pieces" (2015).
In the sisters' bedroom, a poster of Rob Lowe hangs above one of their beds (partially hidden by a lamp). This actor starred alongside Amy Poehler in the series "Parks and Recreation" (2009-2015).
