Brother Orchid

Brother Orchid is a crime comedy-drama about a gangster who leaves his criminal life behind to travel abroad. When Little John Sarto returns to the United States after five years, he finds his old territory under new management, his former associates unwilling to step aside, and his girlfriend Flo Addams moving in different circles. Attempting to reclaim his position puts him in conflict with Jack Buck, who now runs the rackets. After surviving an attack, Sarto takes refuge in a monastery, where the brothers' way of life gradually changes his outlook.

Lloyd Bacon directed the film, which came in the middle of a long run of pictures stretching from Kept Husbands in 1931 through 42nd Street and Footlight Parade in 1933, Marked Woman in 1937, and later titles such as Home Sweet Homicide and I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now. Edward G. Robinson plays Sarto, with Ann Sothern as Flo, Humphrey Bogart as Jack Buck, and Donald Crisp, Ralph Bellamy and Allen Jenkins among the large credited cast of fifty-five. Jerry Wald, Richard Macaulay and Earl Baldwin wrote the screenplay, and Mark Hellinger produced for Warner Bros.
