Earl Macklin is a small-time crook just out of prison after a failed bank robbery. He learns that his brother has been shot dead, and that the bank the two of them had targeted was controlled by a criminal syndicate that does not forgive such attempts. Rather than lie low, Macklin and his partner Cody decide to hit back at the organization and the men responsible, putting Macklin himself in the syndicate's sights.
John Flynn directed and wrote the screenplay, and Carter DeHaven produced the film for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was Flynn's second feature as director, following The Sergeant in 1968 and preceding Rolling Thunder in 1977. Robert Duvall plays Earl Macklin, with Karen Black as Bett Harrow, Joe Don Baker as Jack Cody and Robert Ryan as Mailer. The credited cast runs to 42 names and the crew to 67, and the film runs 103 minutes.
Released in October 1973, the film is rated 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 6,200 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 104 votes. The much larger IMDb sample points to a durable following for this crime drama, and the two scores sit close together.
