A young farmer ploughing his field in rural England turns up a strange, fur-covered skull. He takes the discovery to the local judge, but when the two return to the spot the object has vanished, and the judge dismisses the matter. Soon afterward, unsettling behaviour spreads through the community. The village children fall under the influence of a young woman named Angel Blake, who draws them into occult rituals, and a growing number of residents are touched by something monstrous.
Piers Haggard directed this British horror film from a screenplay by Robert Wynne-Simmons, with Malcolm B. Heyworth and Peter L. Andrews producing for Tigon British Film Productions and Chilton Films. Patrick Wymark plays the Judge, Linda Hayden plays Angel Blake, and Barry Andrews, Michele Dotrice, Wendy Padbury and Anthony Ainley appear among the twenty-five credited cast members. Running 96 minutes, it was Haggard's first feature as director, arriving a decade before his second, Venom.
The film was released in January 1971. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 9,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from roughly 175 votes, indicating a modest but durable following rather than broad acclaim.
