Elsa & Fred

Elsa & Fred is a romantic comedy-drama about two older neighbours who find each other late in life. Fred, a recently widowed man who has spent his years doing what others expected of him, moves into a smaller apartment at his daughter's urging. There he meets Elsa, an eccentric woman in her seventies who has long dreamed of recreating the fountain scene from Federico Fellini's La dolce vita in Rome. Her enthusiasm draws Fred out of his settled, unhappy existence, and the two form a close bond. When Fred learns that Elsa is terminally ill, he agrees to travel with her to Rome so she can pursue the ambition she has carried for decades.

The film is an American remake of the 2005 Argentine picture of the same name, directed by Michael Radford, who wrote the screenplay with Anna Pavignano. It is Radford's sixth feature, arriving after Flawless in 2007. Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer lead the cast as Elsa and Fred, with Marcia Gay Harden, Wendell Pierce, Jared Gilman and Erika Alexander in supporting roles.

Made for about 10 million dollars, the film runs 97 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from around 4,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 5.9 from roughly 99 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 27 reviews places it below the audience scores on IMDb and TMDB.
