In Osaka, five men who each owe money to the yakuza — among them a nightclub owner, an office worker and a former police officer — band together to rob the gang they are indebted to. Their target is the Ogoshi family, one of the city's most powerful crime organizations. The heist largely succeeds, leaving the five with a fortune in yen, but the gang responds by hiring contract killers to hunt them down, and the men find themselves on the run.
Takashi Ishii wrote and directed this 1995 crime thriller, the first entry in the Gonin series and the earliest of his six listed directing credits. It runs 121 minutes and was produced in Japan by Shochiku and Image Factory IM Co. Ltd. The cast is led by Koichi Sato as Mikihiko Bandai, Masahiro Motoki, Jinpachi Nezu, Kippei Shiina, Naoto Takenaka and Takeshi Kitano as Ichiro Kyoya.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from around 2,900 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from a much smaller body of 64 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from six reviews places it essentially level with the audience score on IMDb. Taketo Niitsu, Takuto Niizu and Katsuhide Motoki served as producers.
