Short description

A pathologist becomes convinced that fear itself can kill, producing a parasite that grows along the human spine. He calls it the Tingler, and he believes screaming is the only thing that keeps it from growing large enough to break a person's back. When a deaf-mute woman dies after being terrified, he has the chance to prove his theory, though his experiment reaches well beyond his laboratory.

William Castle directed and produced this 1959 horror and science fiction film from a screenplay by Robb White. It followed House on Haunted Hill the same year in Castle's filmography, with 13 Ghosts and Strait-Jacket coming later. Vincent Price stars as Dr. Warren Chapin, alongside Philip Coolidge, Judith Evelyn, Darryl Hickman, Pamela Lincoln and Patricia Cutts. Columbia Pictures released it, and it runs 82 minutes.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 203 votes, while critics' reviews average 6.3 out of 10 from 18 reviews, placing the two measures close together. The story is set among a small group of people around Chapin's research, including his wife Isabel and his sister-in-law Lucy, and it builds toward the Tingler being torn from a body in an autopsy room.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During film screenings, vibrating devices were installed under the seats, activating randomly throughout the film. To turn them off, viewers had to shout. In the film's climax (the scene in the cinema), all the seats in the actual cinema would begin to vibrate simultaneously.
  • During the final scene in the cinema, the film «The Humble David» (1921) is playing on the screen.
