Cartouche is a French-Italian adventure comedy set in eighteenth-century Paris. Louis-Dominique Bourguignon, known as Cartouche, is a skilled thief who parts ways with the brutal gang leader Malichot because he finds his methods unacceptable. He forms his own band of pickpockets and turns to robbing the aristocracy, sharing the proceeds with the poor. His exploits win him public sympathy and the love of the Romani woman Vénus, but also the enmity of Malichot and of the police chief Ferrussac. Cartouche repeatedly slips out of the traps set for him until his feelings for a woman leave him exposed, and Vénus pays a heavy price to save him.
Philippe de Broca directed the film, which followed The Seven Deadly Sins in 1962 and preceded That Man from Rio, The Oldest Profession, The Magnificent One, Dear Inspector and 1001 Nights in his filmography. He wrote the screenplay with Daniel Boulanger and Charles Spaak, and Alexandre Mnouchkine and Georges Dancigers produced. Jean-Paul Belmondo leads as Cartouche, with Claudia Cardinale as Venus, Jess Hahn, Marcel Dalio, Jean Rochefort and Philippe Lemaire among a credited cast of thirty-six.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10, based on 205 votes.
