Short description
Roberto, a shy law student in Rome, meets Bruno, a forty-year-old exuberant, capricious man, who takes him for a drive through the Roman and Tuscany countries in the summer. When their journey starts to blend into their daily lives though, the pair’s newfound friendship is tested.
What's left behind the scenes
- Vittorio Gassman—who played Bruno—didn't actually do the carrying on the beach. Instead, this was done by a certain Giorgio Lami, a cousin of Edda Lami, who was working as a beach lifeguard at the time of filming.
- Filming on the deserted streets of Rome took place on August 15, 1962. Jean-Louis Trintignant had not yet been cast as Roberto, so by the decision of director and screenwriter Dino Risi, an extra played the passenger in the car next to Vittorio Gassman's character.
- Producer Mario Cecchi Gori wanted to make the finale less tragic, but director and screenwriter Dino Risi disagreed. It ended with Gori and Risi making a bet (something about the weather). Risi won, and the film's finale was shot exactly as he envisioned it.
