Il Sorpasso
Short description
Il Sorpasso follows Roberto Mariani, a reserved law student in Rome, who is drawn into an unexpected road trip with Bruno Cortona, a loud and impulsive man in his forties. Bruno persuades the younger man to join him in his sports car, and the two spend a summer day driving through Rome and the Tuscan countryside, even stopping at the home of Roberto's aunt. The two men could hardly be more different, and Roberto feels a mix of attraction and unease toward his companion's reckless way of life. Over the course of their time together, their new friendship is tested as the journey begins to affect Roberto's everyday life.
Dino Risi directed the film, his third of fourteen features, following The Widower and preceding The Monsters. He also wrote the screenplay with Ruggero Maccari and Ettore Scola, and Mario Cecchi Gori produced. Vittorio Gassman plays Bruno, with Jean-Louis Trintignant as Roberto and Catherine Spaak as Lilli Cortona; Claudio Gora, Luciana Angiolillo and Linda Sini appear in supporting roles. The Italian adventure comedy-drama runs 105 minutes.
Against a worldwide box office of about 2 million dollars, the film holds strong ratings: 8.2 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 14,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from 869 votes, while the critics' rating stands higher at 9.2 out of 10 from seven reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Vittorio Gassman—who played Bruno—didn't actually do the carrying on the beach. Instead, this was done by a certain Giorgio Lami, a cousin of Edda Lami, who was working as a beach lifeguard at the time of filming.
- Filming on the deserted streets of Rome took place on August 15, 1962. Jean-Louis Trintignant had not yet been cast as Roberto, so by the decision of director and screenwriter Dino Risi, an extra played the passenger in the car next to Vittorio Gassman's character.
- Producer Mario Cecchi Gori wanted to make the finale less tragic, but director and screenwriter Dino Risi disagreed. It ended with Gori and Risi making a bet (something about the weather). Risi won, and the film's finale was shot exactly as he envisioned it.
