What's left behind the scenes

  • The scene near the end of the film, where the main character performs in a cloak, is taken from a real performance that one of the students once filmed and sent the footage to Dustin Hoffman. The lines of Lenny Bruce (1925-1966) are taken from this performance.
  • The character of Sherman Hart was based on the comedian and American television star of the 1950s, Milton Berle (1908-2002). His real name was not used because Berle was still alive at the time of filming and could have sued the filmmakers, but the character is characterized by all of Berle’s recognizable mannerisms and attention-grabbing distinctive features, including a cigar in his mouth.
  • The photograph of Lenny lying dead on the floor is a real photograph of Lenny, not a staged photograph of Dustin Hoffman.
