What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the comic book "Civil War".
  • Marvel Studios initially wanted Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark in this film, but planned for his role to be small and completed in just three weeks. However, Downey wanted a larger role, which would correspondingly increase the actor's fee. Marvel Entertainment's CEO, Ike Perlmutter, was furious with his requests, and as a result, he told the screenwriters to completely remove the character of Tony Stark from the plot. However, just when the issue seemed resolved, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige decided to bring Downey back into the project, as his appearance in the film opens up opportunities to create sequels, new franchises, and various plotline developments within the Marvel Universe.
  • Filming began on May 7, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
  • Chad L. Coleman was considered for the role of Black Panther.
  • The film marked the first appearance of the superhero Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, who would receive his own adaptation in 2018.
  • Black Panther's claws are made of vibranium – a fictional material from which Captain America's shield is forged.
  • William Hurt reprised his role as General Ross from the film The Incredible Hulk (2008).
  • In an interview, Daniel Brühl stated that the project's budget was so large that "you could have made twenty films with it".
  • Finalists vying for the role of Spider-Man had to undergo individual screen tests with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., so that producers could gauge the special chemistry between the candidate and the lead actors.
  • At the end of the last shooting day, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie raced each other while still in their superhero costumes.
  • Chris Evans stated that this film would kick off Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 (2018) and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 (2019).
  • The film's trailer broke the record for the most views on YouTube in its first 24 hours, previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), garnering 64 million views.
  • Marvel Studios announced that Spider-Man would have his original comic book costume in the film.
  • Formally, this is the first superhero film to feature another superhero as the antagonist – Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr. – but he is not an antagonist due to malice or deception, but solely because the character disagrees about the role of superheroes in society. The full-fledged supervillains of the film are Baron Zemo and Crossbones.
  • In the film, the Falcon uses a drone called "Redwing." In the Marvel comic book universe, "Redwing" was a real falcon—Sam Wilson’s partner.
  • Director Joe Russo said that "the most powerful shot in the film" was the moment when Steve Rogers holds a helicopter with his bare hands and prevents it from taking off. This shot even made it into the film’s first trailer. Russo said that Chris Evans trained intensely in the gym to physically embody his hero because the creators wanted to test the limits of Steve’s physical strength. About the shot itself, he noted: "On set, Chris hung in the air, holding onto the building with one hand and the helicopter with the other, so we could get this fantastic shot of tense, bulging muscles that would make you feel all the strength and determination with which he is trying to stop the helicopter."
  • Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans describe the dynamic between their characters as a marriage: "We love each other, but at any moment one of us might blow up. We have one goal, but different ways of achieving it. There is no right way, and that’s the beauty of it: there are no right or wrong sides. And that only complicates our path to agreement."
  • Jeremy Renner said that the film could be considered another installment of The Avengers due to the large number of team members, while Anthony Mackie simply called the film "Avengers 2.5."
  • During the Winter Soldier's jump from the roof during one of the scenes, a wide shot shows the character grouping up in advance in order to perform a somersault and reduce the impact of the fall. However, in the previous shot "from behind," it is noticeable that Bucky does not group for a somersault until almost the moment of impact with the roof (the shot is held practically until contact with the roof, and the next shot somehow rewinds time a couple of seconds). Such a landing, incidentally, would have resulted in broken legs.

Such a landing, incidentally, would have resulted in broken legs.
