The Aviator's Wife

François, a young student who works at night, is in a relationship with Anne, who works during the day, and their schedules rarely let them spend time together. One morning he sees her leaving her home with an aviator, jumps to the conclusion that she is being unfaithful and demands an explanation, which Anne puts off. Wandering the streets instead of sleeping that afternoon, he spots the same pilot in the company of another woman and begins following the pair. On a bus he meets Lucie, a curious teenage schoolgirl, and the two of them trail the couple through Paris in the manner of amateur detectives, with François posing as an investigator checking the woman's fidelity. The pilot, it turns out, is Anne's former lover, who had come to tell her their relationship was over.

The film is Éric Rohmer's sixth feature in chronological order, following Love in the Afternoon and preceding Pauline at the Beach, and he wrote the screenplay himself; Margaret Ménégoz produced it for Les Films du Losange. Philippe Marlaud plays François, Marie Rivière plays Anne, Anne-Laure Meury plays Lucie and Mathieu Carrière plays the aviator Christian, with Philippe Caroit and Coralie Clément in supporting roles.

Released in March 1981, the film runs 106 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 134 votes, a modest but clearly favourable response for a small French production.
