In 1971, Delphine leaves her family's farm in the French countryside for Paris, hoping to support herself and live free of the narrow expectations waiting for her at home. In the city she joins the early women's movement and meets Carole, a Parisian in a relationship with a man and deeply involved in the new feminism. The two women begin an affair that unsettles both of their lives. When Delphine's father falls ill, she has to return to the farm to help her mother, and Carole follows her there. The conservative rural surroundings force them to conceal their relationship, and the couple must confront a reality very different from Paris.
Summertime was directed by Catherine Corsini, who wrote the screenplay with Laurette Polmanss. It came in the middle of the director's filmography, between Leaving and An Impossible Love. Izïa Higelin plays Delphine and Cécile de France plays Carole, with Noémie Lvovsky, Laetitia Dosch, Kévin Azaïs and Loulou Hanssen in supporting roles. Elisabeth Perez produced the film, a Belgian-French co-production running 105 minutes.
Released in 2015, the film drew a mixed but generally favourable response. Its ratings sit at 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb, from around 6,300 votes, and the same on TMDB, from a much smaller 367 votes. The critics' rating, 6.7 out of 10 from 57 reviews, closely matches what audiences gave it, suggesting broad agreement rather than a sharp divide between press and public.
