Short description

The Lego Ninjago Movie follows a group of six teenagers who protect their island home of Ninjago. By day they deal with the ordinary pressures of school; by night they serve as secret warriors, using their training and an assortment of vehicles against monsters and villains. Their leader is Lloyd, known as the Green Ninja, who faces a personal problem: the warlord threatening the city, Garmadon, is his father. Under the guidance of the wisecracking Master Wu, Lloyd and his friends must defeat Garmadon and learn to set aside their egos and work as a team. The film is animated in the Lego style and draws on the Ninjago line of toys and its associated series, with mech-versus-mech confrontations forming part of the conflict.

Paul Fisher and Charlie Bean directed, from a screenplay by William Wheeler, Jared Stern and Paul Fisher. For both directors, this 2017 release was the first feature in the chronological list of their directing work. The voice cast includes Dave Franco as Lloyd, Justin Theroux as Garmadon, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn and Kumail Nanjiani, with 52 credited cast members and 160 credited crew.

Made on a budget of 70 million USD, the film took in 123 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1/10 from 34,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5/10 from 1,210 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.8/10 from 132 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the English version of the film, television presenters Kate Garraway and Benjamin Sheppard replaced Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan, respectively.
  • Lloyd’s ringtone is music from the animated series “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu” (2011).
