Salvatore Giuliano

Salvatore Giuliano is found dead in a courtyard in Castelvetrano, his body riddled with bullets and a weapon lying beside him. Police, journalists and onlookers gather at the scene, and the question of how the young Sicilian bandit met his end becomes the starting point for a wider inquiry. Rather than telling his life as a straightforward biography, the film reconstructs the events around his death and the forces that shaped his career, examining the links between banditry, the mafia and political and economic power in post-war Sicily, where Giuliano became a figure in the separatist movement and, in time, an instrument of others.

Francesco Rosi directed and co-wrote the film with Suso Cecchi d'Amico and Enzo Provenzale, with Franco Cristaldi producing. It was Rosi's second feature, arriving after The Swindlers in 1959 and before More Than a Miracle in 1967; his later career included Carmen in 1984. The cast is led by Salvo Randone as the president of the Viterbo Assize Court and Frank Wolff as Gaspare Pisciotta, with Pietro Cammarata appearing as Giuliano.
