The Little Death

The Little Death is an Australian comedy that weaves together several storylines set among neighbours in what looks like an ordinary suburban street. Each household is dealing with its own trouble in the bedroom: a couple trying to fulfill a partner's risky fantasy, a man who begins a secret affair with someone whose identity his wife does not suspect, a pair rebuilding after an intimate experiment goes wrong, a woman whose satisfaction depends on her husband's suffering, and a telephone operator caught in the middle of a chaotic call. A charming new neighbour drifts through these lives, linking them as the characters chase desires and reckon with what happens when those desires are spoken aloud.

Josh Lawson wrote and directed the film in his feature debut, and he also appears as Paul, opposite Bojana Novaković as Maeve. Damon Herriman, Kate Mulvany, Kate Box and Patrick Brammall round out the principal cast. It was produced by Michael Petroni, Jamie Hilton and Matt Reeder, and it runs 96 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 550 votes. A critics' score of 6.1 out of 10 from 57 reviews places it below the audience response.

Lawson went on to direct Long Story Short in 2021, making this the first of two features he has directed.
