What's left behind the scenes

  • Real sailing ships were used in the film. The largest was the 57-meter "Batavia," an exact replica of a 17th-century Dutch trading ship, built in 1995 and now on display as a museum in Lelystad, Netherlands. Smaller was the 46-meter frigate Etoile du Roy, built in Turkey in 1997 for filming the series about Horatio Hornblower. Even smaller was the 35-meter Russian frigate "Shtandart," launched in St. Petersburg in 1999, a fully functional replica of Peter the Great's Baltic Fleet flagship. And the smallest was the 24-meter Dutch sloop "Utrecht," built in 2003.
