Short description
Set in the 17th century, this historical drama follows Michiel de Ruyter, a naval strategist tasked with leading the Dutch fleet. As the Netherlands faces attacks from foreign powers including England and France, the nation is simultaneously threatened by internal political division and the possibility of civil war. While de Ruyter achieves success on the sea, his growing popularity creates tension with government leaders, who eventually send him on a perilous mission.
Directed by Roel Reiné, this project is the 14th of 21 films in his career, following The Man with the Iron Fists 2 and preceding Hard Target 2. What's left behind the scenes
- Real sailing ships were used in the film. The largest was the 57-meter "Batavia," an exact replica of a 17th-century Dutch trading ship, built in 1995 and now on display as a museum in Lelystad, Netherlands. Smaller was the 46-meter frigate Etoile du Roy, built in Turkey in 1997 for filming the series about Horatio Hornblower. Even smaller was the 35-meter Russian frigate "Shtandart," launched in St. Petersburg in 1999, a fully functional replica of Peter the Great's Baltic Fleet flagship. And the smallest was the 24-meter Dutch sloop "Utrecht," built in 2003.

- Four hundred extras were used in the lynching scene. For financial reasons, executive producer and director Roel Rein ordered that only 150 people be dressed in costumes from the appropriate historical period; the remaining 250 actors wore jeans and dark shirts, which was successfully hidden through editing and specific cinematography techniques.
- For the filming of the movie, an artificial island was constructed in the middle of the Dutch lake Markermeer.
- Many of the mise-en-scènes reference plots from 17th-century paintings. For example, the scene in which a maid played by Pipp Pellens pours milk is an almost perfect copy of the famous canvas "The Milkmaid" (1658-1661) by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675).
