The Ghoul

The Ghoul is a 1933 British horror and mystery film about Professor Morlant, an Egyptologist who believes a jewel he has taken from an ancient tomb can grant him eternal life. He arranges to be buried with the stone, but when it goes missing after his death, he rises again to take revenge on those he believes have betrayed him. A group of people, including a lawyer and a supposed clergyman, gather at the professor's manor with their own designs on the jewel.

Directed by T. Hayes Hunter, this was his second feature, following Earthbound in 1920. Boris Karloff leads the cast as Morlant, with Cedric Hardwicke, Ernest Thesiger, Ralph Richardson, Dorothy Hyson and Anthony Bushell in supporting roles. Michael Balcon produced, and Roland Pertwee and John Hastings Turner wrote the screenplay. Running 77 minutes, the film was made in the United Kingdom by Gaumont-British Picture Corporation.

Audience response has been modest. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 3,700 votes, while on TMDB its score is 5.6 from a much smaller base of about 64 ratings. These figures suggest a film that retains some interest among viewers of classic horror, largely on the strength of Karloff's presence, but that is not widely regarded as a standout of the era.
