Tom Rath is a suburban husband and father living in the years after the Second World War. Memories of his service, including a romance in Italy with a woman named Maria and the child he never met, continue to weigh on him. His wife, Betsy, wants a more comfortable life, so Tom takes a public relations position with a television network headed by Ralph Hopkins. The job brings more money but also office politics that pull him away from home, and Tom gradually faces a choice between his career and his family.

Nunnally Johnson directed and wrote the screenplay, his second film as director after Night People in 1954. Darryl F. Zanuck produced for 20th Century Fox. Gregory Peck plays Tom, with Jennifer Jones as Betsy, Fredric March as Ralph Hopkins, Marisa Pavan as Maria Montagne, Lee J. Cobb as Judge Bernstein and Ann Harding as Helen Hopkins, among a credited cast of 59. The film runs 153 minutes.
