Nightmare City follows a television reporter, Dean Miller, and his wife, a doctor, as they try to survive an outbreak of flesh-eating undead in a European city. The infected are not the slow, mindless kind: exposure to radioactivity has turned them into fast, cunning attackers who spread the condition through bites. As their numbers grow, the city descends into chaos and the authorities struggle to contain the threat. Miller, who happens to witness the first wave of attacks, becomes caught up in the fight for survival.
The film was directed by Umberto Lenzi, who made it between Violent Naples and Eaten Alive!, among the six titles listed for him here. He shares screenplay credit with Piero Regnoli, Antonio Cesare Corti and Luis María Delgado, while Diego Alchimede and Luis Méndez produced this Spanish-Italian-Mexican co-production. The cast is led by Hugo Stiglitz as Miller and Laura Trotter as Dr. Anna Miller, with Maria Rosaria Omaggio, Francisco Rabal, Sonia Viviani and Eduardo Fajardo in supporting roles.
Released in late 1980, the film runs 91 minutes and mixes action, horror and science fiction. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from around 7,300 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from roughly 184 votes, indicating a modest but persistent following. A critics' rating of 4.9 from five reviews places it below even those audience scores, so the film is generally regarded as a minor entry in the genre.
