A team of American researchers at an isolated Antarctic station encounters a hostile alien organism that has lain frozen in the ice for a very long time. The creature can copy the appearance of any living thing it absorbs, which makes it impossible for the men to tell who among them is still human. As the station's population is picked off one by one, the survivors turn on each other, and trust collapses under the weight of suspicion.
John Carpenter directed the film, the eighth of the twenty-two features he has made, following Escape from New York and preceding Christine. Bill Lancaster wrote the screenplay, and David Foster and Lawrence Turman produced. Kurt Russell leads the cast as MacReady, with Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David and Richard Dysart among the twenty-one credited cast members; the crew numbered 103.
Released in June 1982, the film had a budget of 15 million US dollars and took about 20 million worldwide, a modest return that did not reflect its later standing. Audiences rate it highly, with 8.2 out of 10 on IMDb from some 523,000 votes and 8.1 out of 10 on TMDB from far fewer. A critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 92 reviews sits close to those audience scores, so all three measures agree on the film's reputation.
