Heidi

Heidi is an orphan who is left in the care of her grandfather, Adolph Kramer, a hermit living high in the Swiss Alps above a village. The villagers doubt the arrangement, knowing Kramer's temper and his distance from the community, but the child's patience and affection gradually draw him back toward his neighbours. Their life together is interrupted when her aunt returns and takes Heidi away to accompany a wealthy man's daughter, who is confined to a wheelchair. Kramer, discovering the girl is gone, sets out to bring her home.

The film was directed by Allan Dwan, whose career reached back to the 1910s and includes Robin Hood, Sands of Iwo Jima and Silver Lode; it sits between Zaza and Young People in his filmography. Shirley Temple plays Heidi, with Jean Hersholt as Kramer, Arthur Treacher, Helen Westley, Pauline Moore and Thomas Beck in support. Darryl F. Zanuck produced for 20th Century Fox, and Walter Ferris and Julien Josephson wrote the screenplay.
