The Invisible Man Returns centres on Geoffrey Radcliffe, a coal mine owner sentenced to death for the murder of his older brother. With no hope of a reprieve, he accepts help from Dr. Frank Griffin, whose brother once discovered the secret of invisibility. Griffin injects Radcliffe with the formula, allowing him to walk out of his cell unseen and set about finding the real killer. The drug carries a known danger, however: those who take it slide toward madness, and Radcliffe's mind begins to give way while his friend and his former fiancée, Helen Manson, try to clear his name.
Joe May directed the film for Universal Pictures, working from a screenplay by Curt Siodmak and Lester Cole. It was May's second credited directorial effort following Asphalt, and it followed the studio's earlier adaptation of H.G. Wells's novel. Vincent Price leads the cast as Radcliffe, with Cedric Hardwicke as Richard Cobb, Nan Grey as Helen Manson, John Sutton as Griffin, Cecil Kellaway as Inspector Sampson and Alan Napier among fifty-eight credited performers.
The film runs eighty-one minutes and is classed as horror, mystery, science fiction and thriller. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from about 6,100 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from 143 votes, suggesting a modest but settled following. A critics' rating of 5.8 from thirty-one reviews sits slightly below those audience figures.
