Set years after the events of the previous film, The Mummy's Curse follows the mummy Kharis as he is freed from the quicksand that had held him for a quarter of a century. A swamp-draining project in rural Louisiana brings both Kharis and the soul of his lost love, Princess Ananka, back to the surface. While an engineer, her co-worker and two professors examine the site, a high priest of the cult that once guarded Ananka has his own plans for the revived mummy. As Kharis roams the bayous, the princess returns to life in the body of a woman working on the drainage project, drawing the mummy toward her.
Leslie Goodwins directed the film, his third feature after Tramp Trouble and Tarnished Angel. Bernard Schubert wrote the screenplay, and Ben Pivar produced it for Universal Pictures. Lon Chaney Jr. plays Kharis, with Peter Coe as Dr. Ilzor Zandaab, Virginia Christine as Princess Ananka, Kay Harding as Betty Walsh, Dennis Moore as Dr. James Halsey and Martin Kosleck as Ragheb. The production credits list 61 cast members and 52 crew members.
Released in December 1944, the film runs an hour. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 3,800 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.5 from roughly 80 votes, indicating modest and limited audience approval for this late entry in the studio's mummy series.
