Short description
A River Runs Through It follows two brothers, Norman and Paul Maclean, growing up in rural Montana as the sons of a Presbyterian minister. The elder, Norman, is studious and intends to leave home for college and a career in literature, while Paul is headstrong and stays close to home, drawn to drink, gambling and trouble. What binds the family is fly fishing, a practice their father taught them and the one setting where the brothers still understand each other. Norman returns from his studies, resumes fishing with Paul, and begins a courtship with Jessie Burns, but the distance between the brothers' paths widens.
Robert Redford directed the film, his second feature after Ordinary People (1980) and the one preceding Quiz Show (1994). Richard Friedenberg wrote the screenplay, and Redford produced with Amalia Mato and William Kittredge. Craig Sheffer plays Norman, Brad Pitt plays Paul, Tom Skerritt and Brenda Blethyn play their parents, and Emily Lloyd appears as Jessie. The production, mounted by Columbia Pictures and Allied Filmmakers, cost about 12 million USD and returned roughly 43 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 7.2/10 from around 71,000 votes, and on TMDB 7/10 from about 1,241 votes. A critics' rating of 7/10 from 45 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- For several years, Robert Redford persuaded Norman Maclean to grant him the rights to adapt his autobiographical novella for the screen.
- Before filming began, Brad Pitt spent four weeks learning how to fly-fish. Since he was learning in Los Angeles, where there are no rivers, he practiced on the roof of a building.
- Brad Pitt only landed the role of Paul on his second attempt. After the first audition, he decided he had performed poorly and insisted on sending the casting directors a recording of himself playing a different scene; it was only after this that he was cast.
