Set in England, The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother follows Sigerson Holmes, a consulting detective who has spent years in the shadow of his far more celebrated brother. When sensitive government papers go missing, Sherlock, preoccupied elsewhere, passes the case to Sigerson, who is eager to prove himself the better detective. Aiding him are an archivist from Scotland Yard and a singer, while a blackmailing opera star and the scheming Moriarty become entangled in the affair. The investigation leads through false identities and secret codes toward a plot that could have serious consequences.
Gene Wilder directed, wrote and stars in the film, the first of the three features he directed, followed by The Woman in Red and Haunted Honeymoon. Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Dom DeLuise, Leo McKern and Roy Kinnear appear among the cast of twenty-three credited performers, and Richard A. Roth produced. Made for about 3 million dollars, it returned roughly 20 million worldwide, a strong commercial result. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 7,800 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from about 175 votes, indicating a modest but consistent reception across both audiences.
