Short description
Searching for the lost world of Atlantis, Prof. Aitken, his son Charles and Greg Collinson are betrayed by the crew of their expedition's ship, attracted by the fabulous treasures of Atlantis. They are all dragged to the bottom of the sea where they meet the inhabitants of the lost continent, an advanced alien race that makes sailors their slaves.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was originally intended to be titled 'Atlantis.' It was soon decided to change the name so that audiences would not confuse it with George Pal's adventure film 'Atlantis: The Lost Continent' (1961), and the movie was titled 'Seven Cities of Atlantis.' Following the failure of the television series 'The Man from Atlantis,' the film was renamed 'Chiefs of the Abyss.' Columbia Pictures, the studio sponsoring the project, decided this was too similar to the adventure thriller 'The Abyss' (Peter Yates, 1977), and the title was changed once more to 'Chiefs of Atlantis.'
- Initially, Peter Cushing was cast as Atraxons, but due to filming delays for the comedy 'Hitler's Son' (Rodney Amato, 1979), he was forced to yield the role to Daniel Massey.
- When the expedition members head toward the lifeboat, none of them are carrying the cat; however, she appears among them once everyone is already inside the lifeboat.
