Short description
The Rocky Horror Picture Show follows newly engaged couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, whose car breaks down during a storm while they are travelling to visit their former college professor. Seeking help, they walk through the rain to a remote castle, where they encounter its strange inhabitants and their host, the flamboyant scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The castle is hosting an annual gathering, and Frank-N-Furter is preparing to reveal his latest creation: a muscular blond man named Rocky. The couple are invited to stay the night, and over the course of it they are drawn into the castle's unconventional world of music, dance and desire.
The film was directed by Jim Sharman, who wrote the screenplay with Richard O'Brien. Tim Curry plays Frank-N-Furter, with Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as Janet and Brad, and O'Brien, Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell among the castle's residents. It was Sharman's first feature, followed in 1981 by Shock Treatment, and the production involved 52 credited cast members and 82 credited crew, with Michael White as producer.
Made on a budget of about one million dollars, the film went on to take roughly 171 million dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its modest cost. It is classified as a comedy, fantasy, horror and science fiction film, with a runtime of 100 minutes. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from more than 163,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 out of 10 from around 3,200 votes, while critics give it 7 out of 10 from 49 reviews, putting critical and audience responses at a similar level.

- In Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' (1994), one of the characters (Anthony Roccamora – Mia Wallace's bodyguard, crippled by Marcellus Wallace, who is never shown) asks to be called Rocky Horror.
