A man comes to in a New York alley, bleeding and unable to remember anything about himself. He wanders into a bar, where he meets Isabelle, a former nun who supports herself by writing erotic fiction and who takes him in. As she tries to piece together his identity, the name he murmurs in his sleep leads her toward Sofia, a porn actress. Isabelle comes to suspect that Thomas was once a director in that world and that his past is tangled up with Sofia's decline, while killers are also pursuing him.
Hal Hartley wrote and directed the film, and produced it with Ted Hope. It followed his 1990 debut, The Unbelievable Truth, and was in turn followed by Fay Grim, Ned Rifle and Where to Land. Isabelle Huppert plays Isabelle, with Martin Donovan as Thomas Ludens and Elina Löwensohn as Sofia Ludens; Damian Young, Chuck Montgomery and Dave Simonds appear among a credited cast of thirty-two, with sixty-eight credited crew members. The production was a British, American and French co-production made for about two million dollars.
On IMDb the film holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.2 out of 10 from 112 votes. The two audiences thus land in similar territory, with the larger IMDb sample being only slightly more favourable.
