Short description

A doctor's research into the roots of evil turns him into a hideous depraved fiend.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novella "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde".
  • The film is an adaptation of the novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
  • Originally, Jekyll's transformation was planned to be conveyed without the help of makeup, relying solely on Barrymore's ability to contort his face. It is clearly visible in the scene where Hyde first reverts back into Jekyll that makeup peels off his finger, shaken by Barrymore's convulsions.
  • John Barrymore invented the spider costume himself, which he used to slowly crawl onto the bed where his double was sleeping, achieved through double exposure.
