Set in the 1840s, The Comancheros follows Texas Ranger Jake Cutter, who arrests the gambler Paul Regret on a charge of killing a man in a duel. Before the prisoner can be delivered to his fate, the two men are drawn into an undercover operation against the Comancheros, a gang of outlaws trading guns and liquor to the Comanche. The Ranger and his captive make unlikely partners as they work to break up the gang's trade. The film is a Western blending action, adventure and romance, produced by 20th Century Fox.
Michael Curtiz directed, working from a screenplay by James Edward Grant and Clair Huffaker, with George Sherman producing. The film stands twenty-fifth in chronological order among the twenty-five features Curtiz directed, following King Creole. John Wayne plays Cutter, with Stuart Whitman as Regret, Ina Balin as Pilar Graile, Nehemiah Persoff as Graile, Lee Marvin as Crow and Michael Ansara as Amelung; thirty-nine performers are credited in all.
The production had a budget of four million dollars and returned the same amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around eleven thousand votes, and on TMDB 6.7 from 219 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from six reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
