Angelique
Short description
Set in 17th-century France, this historical romance follows Angélique, a beautiful woman from a ruined noble family who is forced into a marriage of convenience with the wealthy Joffrey de Peyrac. Despite his scarred appearance, Angélique eventually falls in love with her husband. Their happiness is disrupted when King Louis XIV becomes interested in Angélique. This attention, combined with the jealousy of others and accusations of witchcraft against Joffrey, leads to his arrest and disappearance, prompting Angélique to search for him.
Directed by Bernard Borderie, the film is based on novels by Anne and Serge Golon. It is the fourth film in Borderie's career, following Rocambole and two other earlier works, and precedes four subsequent films in the Angélique series. The production was a collaboration between France, Italy, and Germany, featuring a credited cast of 53, including Michèle Mercier, Robert Hossein, and Jean Rochefort.
The movie earned 22 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has received a consistent reception from viewers, holding a 6.7 rating on IMDb from 3,300 votes and a matching 6.7 rating on TMDB from 192 votes.
