Radio Days
Short description
Radio Days is a memory piece set in New York City between the late 1930s and New Year's Eve 1944, when radio, not television, filled American homes. The film follows Joe, a boy in a large, noisy Jewish family in Brooklyn, and the relatives around him: a father who follows sports broadcasts, an aunt hunting for a husband, and others whose dreams and daily routines are shaped by what comes out of the radio. Alongside the family's story are the people behind the voices they listen to, a world of budding stars and collapsing careers unfolding as the country moves toward war.
Woody Allen directed and wrote the film, the fourteenth of the forty-eight features he has directed, following Hannah and Her Sisters and preceding Another Woman. Robert Greenhut produced, and the large credited cast includes Danny Aiello, Jeff Daniels, Mia Farrow, Seth Green as Joe and Julie Kavner. It was made for about 16 million dollars and returned roughly 15 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from around 39,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7/10 from a much smaller group of voters. A critics' rating of 8.1/10 from 38 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is the only film directed by Woody Allen to feature both Mia Farrow and Diane Keaton, who had previously worked with the director separately.
- The scene where young Joe sees a German submarine off the beach is not entirely fictional. During World War II, German submarines were occasionally dispatched to New York with various missions.
- Many of the situations in the film are rooted in the childhood of director Woody Allen.
- The story of Polly Phelps, the girl who fell down a well, is based on a real event. In April 1949, three-year-old Katie Phipps actually fell into a well shaft in San Marino, California. Attempts to rescue the girl were broadcast live on radio and television. Eventually, rescuers were able to descend to a depth of 45 meters, where they discovered that the girl had died shortly after the fall from lack of oxygen. As in the case of Polly Phelps’ death in the film, the death of Katie Phipps was announced on the radio from the scene.
