Shampoo
Short description
Shampoo is a comedy drama set in Beverly Hills on the day of the 1968 presidential election. George Roundy is a successful hairdresser whose female clients are as interested in him as they are in their hair. He wants to open a salon of his own, and his girlfriend Jill encourages the plan, but raising the money means approaching the wealthy businessman Lester Karpf. George is sleeping with Lester's wife Felicia, and Lester is involved with Jackie, a woman George was previously close to, while Lester's teenage daughter is also drawn to George. As the election results come in, these overlapping relationships become impossible to manage.
Hal Ashby directed the film, his fourth feature after Harold and Maude and The Last Detail. Warren Beatty produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Towne, and stars as George. Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, Lee Grant and Jack Warden appear alongside him, with a credited cast of 69. The film runs 110 minutes.
Made for 4 million dollars, Shampoo took about 60 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds a 6.6 out of 10 from 40 critics' reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 6.1 out of 10 from 248 votes, so critics rated it slightly higher than viewers did.
