Baise-moi
Short description
Baise-moi follows two women in southern France whose lives have been shaped by violence. Nadine, a sex worker, and Manu, who appears in adult films, both kill during confrontations, then meet by chance while on the run. They travel together through the French provinces, luring men and leaving a trail of robbery and death as police close in.
The film is based on Virginie Despentes's own novel and marked her move into directing; she shares directing and writing credit with Coralie Trinh Thi. It stars Karen Lancaume as Nadine and Raffaëla Anderson as Manu, with supporting turns from Ouassini Embarek, Adama Niane and Patrick Eudeline among a credited cast of 21. Philippe Godeau produced for Pan Européenne Productions, with Canal+ among the backers. It runs 77 minutes.
Released in 2000, the film prompted considerable debate over its depictions of sex and violence. On IMDb it holds 4.5/10 from around 19,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.8/10 from roughly 500 votes. Film critics' reviews average 4.8/10 across 58 assessments, putting critics and audiences in broad agreement.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film authorities of the Canadian province of Ontario banned the film as pornographic. The filmmakers applied to register the film as pornographic, however, the film was again banned due to the abundance of violent scenes. By this point, however, the film had already been selected for screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. On March 8, 2001, the film was finally approved for release in Ontario with an R rating (for viewers 18 and over).
- The film is banned from screening in Australia. Attempts to release it to a limited audience were suppressed by the police, acting on behalf of the federal government.
- During the erotic scene, Gaspar Noé's film "One Against All" (1998) is playing.
