Short description

Owen Huntington leads a dull life until he inherits a bankrupt circus and a box of magical animal crackers. When eaten, these crackers transform people into the animals they represent. Along with his wife and daughter, Owen uses this magic to revive the failing circus and build a unique show. However, they must protect their inheritance from Horatio P. Huntington, a malicious relative who wants to take the circus for himself.

The film was co-directed by Tony Bancroft, following his work on Mulan, and Jaime Maestro, who previously directed The Face Robber. Scott Christian Sava also served as a director and co-writer alongside Dean Lorey. The voice cast includes John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, and Lydia Rose Taylor as the Huntington family, with Ian McKellen playing the antagonist. Other voice roles are performed by Sylvester Stallone and Danny DeVito.

Produced by companies across the United States, China, Spain, Korea, and Australia, the movie had a budget of 17 million USD. It earned 13 million USD at the worldwide box office, failing to recoup its production costs. Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 5.8/10 on IMDb based on 4,500 votes and a slightly higher score of 6.4/10 on TMDB from 213 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The guitar in the cartoon is modeled after Brian May's guitar from the band “Queen”, which he once made with his father. The cartoon guitar differs from May’s guitar only in color.
  • The toy monkey in the cartoon is the same one that appeared in the 2009 animated film “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”.
  • Initially, Robin Williams (1951-2014) was cast to voice Chesterfield, but following the actor's death, the character was voiced by Danny DeVito.
