Coming Home
Short description
Coming Home is set in California in 1968, during the Vietnam War. Sally Hyde, the wife of a Marine captain deployed overseas, volunteers at a veterans' hospital, where she crosses paths with Luke Martin, a former classmate left paralysed by his combat injuries. The two grow close, and Sally's feelings for Luke force her to reconsider the war and her marriage, especially once her husband returns from his tour. The story also follows Violet, a friend of Sally's who works at the hospital, and her brother Bill, a veteran struggling with his mental health after returning home.
Hal Ashby directed the film, the fourth in the chronological list of his features, arriving between Shampoo and Being There. Jane Fonda plays Sally, Jon Voight plays Luke and Bruce Dern plays Captain Bob Hyde; Penelope Milford, Robert Carradine and Robert Ginty appear in supporting roles. Waldo Salt and Robert C. Jones wrote the screenplay, with Jerome Hellman producing.
Released in February 1978, the film cost about 3 million dollars and took roughly 33 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. It holds a 7.4 out of 10 critics' rating from 30 reviews and a 7 out of 10 rating on TMDB from around 207 votes, so critics rated it slightly higher than audiences did.
What's left behind the scenes
- A body double was used for Jane Fonda in the sex scenes.
- Director Hal Ashby also appears in a small cameo in the film: in one episode, he drives a sports car and, while overtaking the main character's car, makes gestures to her.
- John Voight’s character is partly based on a real person: Ron Kovic, a paralyzed Vietnam War veteran who wrote the famous book “Born on the Fourth of July,” which Oliver Stone adapted into a film of the same name starring Tom Cruise in 1989.
- The role of Luke was originally intended for Sylvester Stallone, but he, and then Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino, turned it down.
