I Am Cuba

I Am Cuba is a Cuban-Soviet drama made up of four stories set in and around Havana during the final years of the Batista regime. A young woman who works in a luxury hotel is drawn into the world of American clients and loses the respect of the man who loves her. An old tenant farmer, told that the land he works has been sold to a foreign company, burns his own sugarcane field in protest. A student witnesses police violence against demonstrators. In the countryside, a peasant family is caught up in the growing insurgency that will bring Fidel Castro to power. The episodes trace how different Cubans arrive at the same political awakening.

Mikhail Kalatozov directed, following The Cranes Are Flying, his 1957 film. The screenplay was written by Enrique Pineda Barnet and the Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, and the cast includes Sergio Corrieri, Salvador Wood, José Gallardo, Raúl García, Luz María Collazo and the French actor Jean Bouise. The production was a collaboration between the Soviet studio Mosfilm and Cuba's ICAIC, with 41 credited crew members.

Audiences rate the film highly: on IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.9 out of 10 from 261 votes. A critics' rating of 9.1 out of 10 from 40 reviews places it above both audience scores.
