Rollo Treadway is a wealthy young man who proposes to his neighbor Betsy O'Brien, only to be turned down. He decides to take the cruise he had planned as a honeymoon anyway. Through a mix of circumstances, he and Betsy both end up aboard the wrong vessel, a ship that drifts out to sea with the two of them alone on board. Stranded together, they must manage the vessel and its dangers before they can find their way back.
The Navigator is a silent comedy directed by Donald Crisp and Buster Keaton, written by Clyde Bruckman, Jean C. Havez and Joseph A. Mitchell, and produced by Keaton, who also stars as Rollo opposite Kathryn McGuire as Betsy. It was released in September 1924. For Keaton it is the fifth of the thirteen films he directed, arriving between Sherlock Jr. and Seven Chances.
The film runs a little over an hour. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.5 from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from around 287 votes, indicating a solid and widely held reputation among viewers rather than a sharply divided one.
