Short description

Jimmie Shannon is a young stockbroker whose bad market call has left him close to ruin. A lawyer arrives with the will of a deceased relative, who left Jimmie seven million dollars on one condition: he must be married by seven o'clock in the evening on his twenty-seventh birthday, which happens to be that very day. Jimmie is in love with Mary Jones but has never managed to tell her, and after his clumsy attempt to propose goes wrong, he sets out to find a bride before the deadline, aided by his business partner and his lawyer.

Buster Keaton directed and stars in this silent comedy, the sixth of the thirteen features he directed, coming between The Navigator and Go West. Keaton produced alongside Joseph M. Schenck, with a screenplay by Clyde Bruckman, Jean C. Havez and Joseph A. Mitchell. The cast includes T. Roy Barnes as Jimmie's partner, Snitz Edwards as the lawyer, Ruth Dwyer as Mary, Frances Raymond as her mother and Erwin Connelly as the clergyman, among twenty-eight credited performers.

On IMDb the film holds 7.8 out of 10 from about thirteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 7.5 out of 10 from several hundred. A critics' rating of 8.6 out of 10 from seventeen reviews places it above both audience scores. In its fifty-six minutes it moves from financial panic to a citywide chase, a structure typical of Keaton's independent productions of the mid-1920s.
