Ernest "Stick" Stickley, a car thief just released from prison, wants nothing more than to stay out of trouble. That plan collapses when he agrees to help an old friend with a money handover, only to watch the man be shot dead during what turns out to be a drug deal. The killers work for the mobster Chucky, so Stick goes into hiding by taking a job as a chauffeur for the wealthy Barry Braham, keeping his head down while he tries to build a quiet new life. His feelings for Kyle, Barry's financial consultant, complicate that plan, and when Chucky's men close in, Stick has to fight back.
Burt Reynolds directed and stars as Stick, working from a screenplay by Elmore Leonard and Joseph Stinson, with Jennings Lang producing. Candice Bergen plays Kyle, George Segal is Barry, and Charles Durning plays Chucky; José Pérez appears as Rainy and Richard Lawson as Cornell. It was Reynolds' fourth film as director, following Gator, The End and Sharky's Machine.
Universal Pictures backed the production with a budget of 22 million dollars. Audience scores are mixed, with the film holding a 6.6 rating on IMDb and a 5.5 on TMDB, suggesting a modest reception for this crime drama.
