Short description
A Short Film About Killing follows three men in Warsaw whose lives are on separate paths until they intersect. Jacek, a restless twenty-year-old drifter, has no clear place in the city and no apparent purpose. Waldemar is a taxi driver who moves through the same streets with a growing sense of hopelessness. Piotr is a young law student who has just passed his final examination and believes in the value of his profession. When Jacek takes a taxi to an isolated spot and murders the driver, Piotr, now a lawyer, is called on to defend him in court.
The film was directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski, who wrote the screenplay with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and it is the fifth of the thirteen films he directed. It is the expanded cinema version of the fifth part of his Decalogue series, made for Polish television. Mirosław Baka plays Jacek, Krzysztof Globisz plays Piotr, and Jan Tesarz plays Waldemar, with Zbigniew Zapasiewicz, Barbara Dziekan and Aleksander Bednarz in supporting roles. Ryszard Chutkowski produced.
Released in 1988 and running eighty-five minutes, the film holds a 7.9 rating on IMDb from around twenty-four thousand votes and a 7.6 on TMDB from several hundred. A critics' rating of 9 out of 10 from twenty-three reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Krzysztof Kieślowski's (1941-1996) film touched upon the theme of violence so profoundly that the Polish authorities declared a five-year moratorium on the death penalty.
- Unique green filters were used during filming, specifically created for this film by cinematographer Sławomir Idziak. Filming some shots required the use of several such filters at once (up to three simultaneously). According to director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieślowski (1941-1996), Idziak created approximately 600 filters in total.
