Short description

A race of human-like marsupials turns up in Australia, drawing the attention of Professor Harry Beckmeyer, who has spent years trying to prove such creatures exist. His research brings him into contact with Jerboa, a female of the species, and he becomes emotionally attached to her. The arrival of these beings is treated as a threat, and the military is ordered to act against them, leaving Beckmeyer caught between his scientific interest and the drive to destroy the group he has come to care about.

Philippe Mora directed and wrote the film, and produced it with Charles Waterstreet. It stands third in his filmography and follows Howling II: Stirba - Werewolf Bitch, made two years earlier; Communion came after it, in 1989. Barry Otto leads the cast as Beckmeyer, with Imogen Annesley as Jerboa, Max Fairchild as Thylo, Lee Biolos, Dagmar Bláhová and Ralph Cotterill among the credited players, and 25 cast members and 54 crew credited in all. Made in Australia on a budget of 2 million USD, the film runs 98 minutes.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.6 out of 10 from around 6,100 votes, and on TMDB 4.5 out of 10 from 155 votes. A critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 13 reviews places it below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Did not receive a theatrical release in its native Australia.
  • Despite the title and the claim that it is based on Gary Brandner’s novels “I, II, and III,” the film is actually unrelated to any of Brandner’s books.
