Santa Sangre

Santa Sangre centers on Fenix, who grew up in a Mexican circus as the son of the ringmaster Orgo and Concha, a religious zealot who leads a sect called Santa Sangre. A violent family tragedy leaves Fenix confined to a psychiatric hospital. Years later he escapes and finds his mother, who survived the incident but lost both arms, and settles into a life with her. As memories of his childhood surface, a series of killings takes place in the city.

Alejandro Jodorowsky directed and co-wrote the film with Claudio Argento and Roberto Leoni; Claudio Argento also produced. It followed El Topo and The Holy Mountain in his filmography. Axel Jodorowsky plays the adult Fenix, with Adan Jodorowsky as the young Fenix, Blanca Guerra as Concha, Guy Stockwell as Orgo, Thelma Tixou as the Tattooed Woman and Sabrina Dennison as Alma, among 28 credited cast members.

Made in Italy and Mexico, the film runs 122 minutes and blends drama, fantasy, horror and thriller. On IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from about 25,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from roughly 525 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6/10 from 43 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores, indicating strong professional regard alongside solid viewer approval.
