Now, Voyager

Charlotte Vale is a woman from a wealthy Boston family who has spent years under the constant control of her domineering mother. The strain of that life has left her withdrawn and unwell, and she finds little comfort beyond her carving work. When a psychiatrist brought into the household by her sister-in-law assesses her, he diagnoses a nervous breakdown and sends her to his sanatorium to rest and recover. Her time there restores her confidence, and a subsequent cruise to South America brings her a sense of freedom she has never known, along with a romance with a man she meets on board. The relationship is complicated by his existing family obligations, and Charlotte must decide how much of her new independence she is willing to claim.

Irving Rapper directed the film, the first in the directing career listed here, with a screenplay by Casey Robinson and Hal B. Wallis producing for Warner Bros. Pictures. Bette Davis leads as Charlotte, joined by Paul Henreid as Jerry Durrance, Claude Rains as Dr. Jaquith, Gladys Cooper as Mrs. Vale, Bonita Granville as June Vale and John Loder as Elliot Livingston, among twenty-seven credited performers.
