Almost Holy is a documentary about a pastor in Mariupol, Gennadiy Mokhnenko, who takes homeless and drug-addicted young people off the streets and brings them to the rehabilitation centre he founded, Pilgrim Republic. He patrols the city and removes children by force, a method that divides opinion: some see him as a people's hero, others as a vigilante acting outside the law. The film places his work against the upheaval that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, when corruption and failing infrastructure left many young people without homes and dependent on a mixture of alcohol and injected cold medicine.
Steve Hoover directed and wrote the film, and Danny Yourd produced it. It was made as a co-production between Ukraine and the United States, through the company Animal, and was released in 2015. It runs 96 minutes and is classified as both a documentary and a drama. Almost Holy sits in the early part of Hoover's directing career, and in the chronology of his films it comes before Ferrari: Fury and the Monster, which followed in 2026.
On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 27 votes, suggesting a modest but favourable response from those who have seen it.
